A Door Closes: MinnesotaCare Cut for Undocumented Immigrants By: Micah Gatewood

As of June 9th within the Minnesota legislature, the senate passed a law that would repeal adults in Minnesota who were undocumented for MinnesotaCare.

However, there are many adults(mainly POC and immigrants) looking to fight against this newly approved law and are trying to take a stand against the unruly battle for health rights against the senate.

“If our leaders believe this is the best offer they can make—sending our immigrant neighbors to their deathbeds—then they are deeply mistaken about how hard we are willing to fight to protect them,” said Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega (DFL-St. Paul), vice-chair of the Caucus.

MinnesotaCare was introduced to Minnesota in 1992 by Arne Carlson with legislative support. This act helped the causes of low income Minnesota citizens who could not afford Medicare for their families. This program funded federal and state dollars to provide support for over 105,000 Minnesotans who were 200% below the poverty line.

As of right now, the legislature is looking to get a signature from Governor Jim Waltz for his approval of the newly made law.
